Local Heroes is Young at Heart’s new monthly movie night at Erskineville Town Hall, showcasing the best new locally-made documentaries.

The Silences is part memoir and part meditation on memory, history and photography. Acclaimed Australian director Margot Nash has made a stunning personal essay about growing up with mental illness in the family, about a confusing and destructive mother/daughter relationship, and about repressed grief and family secrets. Like an existential detective, Nash unpacks a mother’s story of lost opportunities, lost love and grief, and a father’s story of work, mental illness and war.

This suspenseful and touching story speaks of the myriad pressures imposed on women across time, the cathartic power of introspection, and the way our families shape our identity, politics and beliefs. All families have their secrets, and The Silences transcends it subject with universal insights.

This community preview includes a Q&A with filmmaker Margot Nash. To reserve a seat (pay on arrival) call (02) 9550 2266.
