After quitting his job at a mountain quarry, Tatsuo lives on his savings, filling his days with idle strolls and gambling at pachinko parlours. One day he meets Takuji and Chinatsu, a brother and sister from a poor family who live in a rundown shack. Their father is ill, so they must work hard to keep their family afloat. Tatsuo becomes attracted to Chinatsu, but she has a married lover on whom her brother’s livelihood depends. Meanwhile, Tatsuo remains a drifter. In spite of everything, can he change for her, and she for him? Set in stunning Hokkaido, this often dark and moody film was awarded Best Director at Montreal World Film Festival.
