A beautiful film that not only offers a glimpse into a world rarely captured on film, but also conveys such vibrancy in the wonderful dance sequences, and stunning scenery of Kathmandu. Only screening once in Sydney, Songava: Dance Of The Orchids tells the story of Diya, whose father has arranged her marriage to a man she does not love, forcing her to face the truth. Diya longs for her independence to fulfil her dream of becoming a traditional Nepalese dancer. As her friendship with Kiran, a fellow dancer deepens and develops into a love affair, she is confronted with life changing decisions. Pursuing their relationship and flying in the face of tradition, the love this couple share is unyielding, but nothing can prepare them for the events that unfold.

Winner of the Special Jury Award at the Toronto Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival, Songava plays in Sydney for Queer Screen on September 19. More info/tix
