Screening as part of the Korean Film Festival In Australia, New World is the Korean mafia flick to rewrite the standard for all mafia flicks. Goldmoon, the biggest crime organization in Korea, is suddenly in chaos when its leader Chairman Seok is killed in a mysterious car accident. Top-level police officials initiate project “New World” to intervene in Goldmoon’s election process for the next leader, and to use Chairman Seok’s death to their advantage in controlling the crime organisation. The project leader detective Kang (Choi Min-shik) calls upon Goldmoon’s apparent heir Jung Chung’s(Hwang Jung-min) right hand man Ja-sung (Lee Jung-jae), an undercover cop who he planted deep within the organisation eight years ago. But Ja-sung, who had been waiting long for the day he is reinstated into the police, is conflicted by Detective Kang’s contradictory mission. Caught between Jung Chung who trusts him with his life, and Kang whose orders are not in his best interests, Ja-sung is wedged between both opposing hierarchies and must make a final decision that rests on loyalty and betrayal.
