The life and music of r’n’b queen Sharon Jones is a heartfelt documentary directed by two-time Oscar winner for Best Documentary, Barbara Kopple.
Sharon Jones (aka ‘the female James Brown’) is a force of nature on and off-stage. She struggled to hit the big time: ‘too black, too short, too old,’ she was told. Luckily for music fans, she joined up with the Dap-Kings and her career took off. Kopple (who also directed the Dixie Chicks documentary Shut Up and Sing, SFF 2007) filmed the valiant singer over a year, as she underwent treatment for cancer. Jones is determined to get back on stage and her devoted manager, medical team, and the loyal Dap-Kings are behind her all the way. When she falters, it’s heartbreaking. When she gets back up, belting out her classics, it’s triumphant like a Hollywood melodrama – but with more soul, more funk!
Miss Sharon Jones also screens Sunday Jun 12 at Event Cinemas George St
