When a school teacher visits a student’s home to investigate his truancy, she comes into contact with a curse that forces her to re-live the horrific events that took place in the home 10 years ago. Unlike the blood-frenzied fury of slasher-flick villains, the perpetual malice of director Takashi Shimizu’s famous family of evil spirits manifests itself in a more patient torment of the film’s victims. While the hellish sound-scape and prickling atmosphere in the first half of the film will surely bring chills to even the most veteran of horror fanatics, it is but a promise of horrors to come. A classic Japanese thriller.
