In The Turn is the story of Crystal, a 10-year-old transgender girl growing up in rural Canada. Tormented at school by teachers and peers alike, Crystal faces daily insults and physical altercations. But she finds hope amidst adversity when she happens across a video promoting the Vagine Regime on her mother’s Facebook timeline. When Crystal sees a transgender skater in the video, she realizes that one day she, too, can be a loved and respected part of a team.
When the Vagine Regime hears Crystal’s story, the group sends her gear and support, and eventually raises enough money to bring her to a junior roller derby camp held in Los Angeles. In The Turn weaves Crystal’s story into the broader narrative of the evolution of roller derby from a niche sport into a social movement with strong roots in the LGBTQ community.
