This documentary explores the role athletes played in the GDR particularly during the 1960s and 1970s when East Germany was a major competitor at the Olympic Games. The film focuses on the intensive sports program with which the athletes, who were treated like heroes, were involved: Sandra Kaudelka (also the director of the film) who was a talented diver; Brita Baldus, three-time European diving champion; Ines Geipel, who holds a relay worldrecord; Udo Beyer, champion shot-putter; Marita Koch, 400 meter sprint world-record holder. Combined with well-sourced archival material, the film highlights the often brutal training regime to which they were subjected, and the personal reminiscences they have about their experiences, some of which still haunt them to this day.
