Inspired by true events, Hush! Girls Don’t Scream is about Shirin, a young woman growing up in Iran, who is tormented by a secret that haunts her throughout her life. After years of neglect and indifference from her parents and school officials who failed to hear what the clearly distraught little girl was trying to tell them, Shirin decides to take her fate into her own hands. As the film progresses, characters are forced to confront their own demons, pedophilia, and a closed society’s horrifically inept efforts to deal with it. Despite the consequences, Shirin seeks her own redemption, culminating in an ending that is truly unforgettable.

Hush! Girls Don’t Scream won the Audience Special Award at the Irvine International Film Festival in the United States; Best Film Award at the 2012 Fajr International Film Festival in Iran; and Best Feature Award at the fourth London Iranian Film Festival.

This special screening at the Australian Catholic University’s North Sydney Campus is free, and will be followed by a Q&A with Director Pouran Derakhshandeh.
