Director Ernesto Daranas Serrano’s feature film ‘Conducta’ opens the 2014 Sydney Latin American Film Festival. This sensitive and unembellished look into contemporary Cuba has taken the Cuban box office by storm, scored multiple awards and spurred heated debate. With brilliant performances and captivating cinematography, ‘Conducta’ (Behaviour) has been hailed as the most notable film to come out of Cuba in the last decade. It tells the story of Chala - an eleven year old who has been forced to grow up too soon and be the breadwinner in his family. At school he is guided with a firm but affectionate hand by his teacher, Carmela. She affords Chala the support and love lacking in his home life. He responds with mutual love and respect. But things begin to fall apart when Chala is sent off to a school for children with behavioural problems.
Following the film, the festival’s Opening Night Fiesta gets underway around the corner at Goodgod Small Club with Mucho Mambo - a truly authentic latin band with a funky edge - plus DJ Señor Bolivar. You can also feast on a delicious selection of bites and enjoy drinks from Pacífico Beer and Havana Club Rum!
