Another standout performance from Australian Cate Blanchett, Carol is set in New York in the ’50s and explores the consequences of two women falling in love. One, a department store worker and budding photographer (Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), the other, a well-healed married woman who has experienced the fallout from following one’s heart before.
Based Patricia Highsmith’s novel, Carol’s standing ovation at Cannes was just the start. Blanchett is now up for an Oscar later this month for her performance. Tickets/more info
