Carol is the story of forbidden love between two women set in 1950s New York.
While Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is working in the toy section of a Manhattan department store at Christmas time, she is approached by an older woman, Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), who purchases a model train set for her daughter as a gift on Therese’s recommendation. Carol accidentally leaves her gloves on the counter, and Therese mails them to her home in New Jersey. And so evolves an impassioned romance that takes place on a road trip west toward new frontiers where taboos are crossed. But this romantic drama takes a fraught turn when Carol’s husband unexpectedly turns up, and she is forced to choose between custody of her child and the person she wants to be with.
