Starring Sanaa Lathan, Mark Strong and Luke Wilson, direcotr Mark Elijah Rosenberg’s Approaching The Unknown ingeniously puts the science back in science fiction. An exercise in controlled tension, the story follows an astronaut hurtling alone through space on a one-way mission to Mars, where he will activate a reactor that can turn soil into drinking water, thus making the planet inhabitable for future human colonisation. As deeply human as it is tech-savvy, the film is an extraordinary sci-fi journey.
