When Anita, a Jewish girl of Hungarian origin, emerges alive from Auschwitz after the war, she is taken in by Aunt Monika, her only surviving relative. Monika lives with her husband Aron, their baby son Roby, and Aron’s brother Eli in a small town near Prague. However, Anita soon discovers that memory is not a welcome guest. Everyone wants to forget the horrors of Auschwitz, and no one wants to hear her story. Anita quickly finds herself involved in an intense and passionate affair and so begins her courageous search to learn to live again.
Anita B. is loosely based on the autobiographical novel Quanta Stella C’è Nel Cielo written by Edith Bruck (born Edith Steinschreiber), a holocaust survivor whose adopted home is Italy. Acclaimed Italian director Roberto Faenza collaborated with Bruck on the screenplay for this moving film about life, hope, love and the importance of memory.
